This was a HUGE week for us at Mayfield. It was the last Sunday for our Senior Pastor Don Cummings who has now retired after serving Mayfield UMC for 24 years. Needless to say there has been a lot of work around this transition over the past several months. This was a very unique service for us meant to honor Pastor Don and celebrate everything God has done through his ministry. From the programming side of things it was a crazy process. Instead of our usual three service schedule, we combined our entire congregation into one 10:00am service. We had the sermon, a special presentation, a video slideshow, communion, creeds and liturgies, and the music…oh the music. We had every musical group from the church participate in this service. This means we had the full band, the kids bell choir, choral anthems, kids choir, organ led hymns, and the bell choir all included in the service. Our planning grid worked out to around a 90 minute service. This is really long for us and was only due to the special occasion. Service itself ran 105 minutes. Even playing it safe we severely underestimated what it takes to coordinate that many groups, elements, and people. It was definitely a learning experience.
I don’t really have a set list from this service. The band only played one song and that was a colaboration between the band, choir, and bell choir. We played “We Offer Christ” which is the song I talked about last week that was written when the church moved into the new building.
This service was very fun and very challenging to put together, but all in all we accomplished our two goals:
1. Worship God
2. Honor Pastor Don
Now the big question is what the future holds for Mayfield Church. This will be an exciting and difficult transition. We’ll resume our regular service schedule next week. For those of you who are severely missing a full set list recap, head on over to Fred McKinnon’s blog for as many set lists as your heart desires.
